Cost:

Google Chrome operating system is 100% open source and it is free to use. No more license fee, genuine software validity or os update problem. So it is direct competition to Microsoft windows operating system. Who will ignore a quality product that too offered for free.

Speed:

It is a well known pain of a  windows user who should wait for minutes and minutes to get their system running up. Also a windows OS system will always perform slower than at the time of purchase. More the usage period, more the system slows. Since the failure of windows vista, people really need a good OS to replace the widely used windows XP. It is said/noticed that the upcoming Microsoft OS  Windows 7 (shortly launched – around october 2009) is light weighted and loads faster than vista. But Google challenged that this new OS will just boot in seconds not in minutes. So people will no more need to wait to start working on the system when they switch it on. Especially for notebook/netbook users it will be a WOW factor since it can save lot of battery power.

Compatibility:

Drivers support is the main problem in an operating system. Windows XP users experienced lot of issues at the initial stage and also Vista users was frustrated for the same at the beginning. The main reason for less linux users is also the same. Linux platforms does not support most of the hardwares and also required more time/knowledge to configure and run the OS. But Google said that with this Google chrome OS “Users don’t want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware, or have to worry about constant software updates.”

Security:
Google says that it will redesign the architecture of the OS where there should be no word for virus, malwares or spywares. Since security is the big concern of the operating system Google takes this very seriously. Windows users will definitely turn into this OS if this happens as they already know the impact of the losses due to virus attacks.

Web Applications:

It is really unnoticed that all the local applications are gone to web and we started using every thing online. Google Docs for Microsoft office.  Online players for windows media player. Gmail for outlook and many. So Google focuses on running web applications on operating system level instead of from browsers. This could be a revolution after 2010 since most user experience happens in web than local. So definitely this announcement of new OS architecture will push Microsoft to start thinking about WINDOWS 8 or so by now itself…. Let us keep our fingers crossed until the beta release of this chrome….

Maybe you’re an avid hiker and the trail map site you always go to is in the fourth or fifth position, and you want to move it to the top. Or perhaps it’s not there at all and you’d like to add it. Just today, the price of Apple Iphone 3G have been revealed by Vodafone for India. They going to start selling 8GB and 16GB Model at Rs 31,000 and Rs 36,100 in all vodofone stores, from this August 22. The Prices really disappoints the Iphone lovers (Of course me as well) in India who were waiting for the product for a long.  The day when Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the launch of Iphone 3G, he stated that the price will be $199 or equivalent local currency in all countries for the 8GB model. It should be around Rs 8000 in India, but actually now it is Rs 31,000 which is 8 times higher than expected value.

Also, Vodafone pushing us to pay advance of Rs 10,000 to book Iphone  3G with in today and tomorrow to avoid queues and for “no stock” hassle. (Sure there wont be queue, may be not long due to the disappointment in price ). You should also be a subscriber of vodafone to activate the Iphone or else at least sign up for the subscribition. Let us wait for the Airtel announcement (Should be little difference with vodafone, not still to expect for $199) and the reaction of this expensive price. Personally, I was waiting to replace my Nokia N70 with this Iphone 3G on Airtel. But above the expensive price, I have got many reasons to not go for at this point of time… I will write about that in detail soon.

Finally Airtel today announced the launch date of Iphone 3G in India.  According to the news the Iphone 3G can be purchased from Airtel shops from the midnight on August 22, 2008. However, cautioned on their web-sites that the iPhone on launch in India will not be offered fully on 3G networks, and some of the features of the iPhone 3G will not be immediately available. Vodafone also stated to  bring Apples’s iPhone this year but Airtel acted fast.

“iPhone has been the iconic technology revelation of this year, “said Sanjay Kapoor, president of Mobile Services at Bharti Airtel. “Airtel has been at the forefront of innovation and customer delight in the Indian telecom sector. Introducing iPhone 3G to India further underscores our commitment to enrich the communication experience of all Airtel users.”

The Indian government announced last week detailed guidelines for the auction of 3G spectrum during this year. The commercial roll out of 3G services is expected only in the first half of next year, said Madhusudan Gupta, senior research analyst at Gartner in an interview on Friday.

I have already wrote that Airtel and Vodofone have announced to launch Iphone 3G in India shortly. Post to that, Airtel now started booking Iphone at their website – http://www.airtel.in/iphone3g ,, So the iphone fever have started spreading in India, huh? The Indian government has as yet to issue final guidelines on the auction of 3G (third generation telephony) spectrum and licenses in India. One of the issues holding up a final decision is whether foreign companies can bid for the license.

Vodafone is however already an operator in India following its acquisition of a majority stake in mobile services company Hutchison Essar, renamed as Vodafone Essar. Vodafone announced earlier this year that the iPhone 3G will be available in India during the year.

In an advertisement on Wednesday in The Times of India and on its Web site, the company is offering to pre-register customers for the iPhone 3G. The company however cautions that the device offered by Vodafone is currently compatible only with 2G networks, and some of its features may not work in India.

A Vodafone India spokesman declined to comment further on the company’s offering.

Bharti Airtel, another large Indian operator, has also said it will launch the iPhone 3G in India later this year. The company has not specified the date for the availability of the phone to its customers. Vodafone’s offer to pre-register customers reflects significant market interest in the Apple iPhone, and may be an attempt to get a marketing edge over Bharti Airtel.

IMAP is the best way to access your email from multiple devices (e.g. phone or desktop). It keeps the same information synced across all devices so that whatever you do in one place shows up everywhere else you might access your email.

For example, I can:

• read an email in Gmail, then
• move it to the “Starred” folder on my Nokia N70 Music Edition, then
• archive it by moving it to “All Mail” in Thunderbird

If you access Gmail via a phone or email client using POP, you may be frustrated by the fact that any action you take, such as reading, sorting or deleting, doesn’t sync with your Gmail account. You may have read and sorted all your new mail on your phone, for example, but when you log back in to Gmail using a browser, you’re presented with a full inbox of unread messages that you have to re-read and re-organize. What you may not realize is that you have another option that solves these problems: IMAP.

It can be a little confusing to learn about different ways to get email on your phone or in an email client such as Thunderbird or Outlook, but this breakdown of the key differences between POP and IMAP should help you decide which way to go.

There are two ways your devices and clients can communicate with Gmail:

A one-way communication path (POP). Your device asks us for data and pulls it from our servers — but that’s it. Things you do on your device have no effect on the server. If you read a message on your phone, then log in to Gmail, you will see that same message marked as unread. It may start to feel like Groundhog Day.

A two-way communication path (IMAP). Unlike with POP, your devices talk back to our servers and sync your changes automatically with IMAP. When you sign in to your Gmail account in a web browser, actions you’ve taken on your email client or mobile device (like putting a message in a ‘work’ folder) will also appear in Gmail (your message will already have a ‘work’ label on it). This all happens automatically once you set up IMAP, so you don’t have to read or sort all your mail twice. This is really helpful when accessing Gmail from multiple devices.

2. Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page.
3. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
4. Select Enable IMAP.
5. Configure your IMAP client and click Save Changes.

While the regular forward button works in some cases, for long conversations users can simply check the “forward all” button that appears to the right of the text box. Gmail makes it easy to organize your emails even without using folders — if you know how to get the most out of their features. Here are some habits you can employ to keep your emails easily accessible.

1. Back up their messages. While your messages are fairly secure residing online, there is always the chance that something could happen to them. If you have important information stored on them this could be disastrous. There are a number of ways you can back up your Gmail so that it’s accessible both online and off.

7. Archive old messages. You may not have to delete messages on your Gmail account, but you don’t always want them all hanging around in your inbox either. 8. Trick their labels. Labels appear in the menu to the left of the main Gmail screen in alphabetical order, but the alphabet doesn’t always reflect the labels that you use the most. You can fix this by preceding your most used labels with a symbol or with a letter near the beginning of the alphabet. This will make it easier to find the labels you need access to more often, with little effort on your part.
9. Know how to include or exclude chats from search results. Sometimes you know what you’re looking for, and it may or may not be a chat. Efficient Gmail users know how to make sure these chats show up when they want them to and go away from search results when they don’t. Simply include “+label:Chat” if you’d like to see chat results as well.
10. Use color-coded labels. You used to need special extensions to add color to your Gmail, but no longer. Now Gmail has built in label coloring. Make your Gmail work better and faster by color coding all your labels so you’ll be able to tell at a glance what labels are associated with your messages.

While Gmail is constantly adding new features, sometimes the developers can’t keep up with the demand for new, productive features. You don’t have to wait around, however. Try out some of these extensions for Firefox to make your Gmail experience more effective.

1. Get notifications of new mail. This add-on to gmail is from Google and allows you to get alerts when you have new mail right in your task bar. This can make it easier if you’re waiting for an email to arrive or just want to keep up with your messages throughout the day without having to constantly refresh Gmail.

3. Save searches. Instead of searching for a particular email or set of emails every time you need it, efficient users just use this extension to save searches for later. This allows you to quickly access your past searches without having to remember exactly what you searched for every time.
4. Conversation previews. While some users prefer the abbreviated version of the email Gmail usually shows, there are others who want to skim over emails quickly to look for important conversations and information. This extension allows users to see a small preview of the content of the email so users can decide what’s most important and what can wait until later.
5. Use Gmail as a hard drive. Most people only use a fraction of the space their Gmail account allots to them. Efficient Gmail users know better than to use let that space completely go to waste. The Gmail Drive app allows Windows users to use Gmail as if it were another drive on their computers, making it easy to drag, drop, store and send data.
6. Cut out repetitive email. If you find yourself sending out loads of fairly repetitive emails, you can cut down the time you spend working on tasks like this and get more time to work on more important things with AutoHotKey. Users can create scripts that whip up emails quickly and easily.
7. Search by date. Don’t sort through loads of messages with the same keywords as what you’re looking for if you know the date you sent the email. This script adds a date button to Gmail’s search form to speed up your searches.
8. Drag files into Gmail. Don’t make sending attachments inefficient by searching through files to find what you need. Just use this extension to drag and drop files right into an email to send them.
9. Integrate with GTD. If you’re trying to make your Gmail more productive, why not make everything in your life more productive at the same time by integrating a popular GTD program right into Gmail with this to-do management extension.

2. Can use Gmail as a notepad. Got some ideas you want to jot down quickly but don’t need to open a separate document for? Simply type it up in an email and Gmail will save it as a draft for you which you can later access, change and save again. Best of all, this information is available on any computer.
